Selection for the Alabama All- State Jazz Band will be determined by a taped audition that students will prepare and send to the state IAJE President. Tone quality, musicianship, style, accurate tempos on etudes, and improvisational abilities will all be considered by the judges who listen to the tapes. Directors will be notified of the selected students approximately three weeks after the deadline. Guitarist, bassists and drummers will be required to bring their own equipment for rehearsals and performances at AMEA.

All student audition tapes or cds, audition form, and audition fee must be submitted to the IAJE president postmarked on or before November 15, 2007. The audition fee is $15.00 per student. Make checks payable to “Alabama IAJE”. Directors must be members of IAJE. Effective September 1,2006 ALL IAJE dues must be paid to the IAJE headquarters. Individuals wishing to attain or renew membership go to www.IAJE.org to do so. For active membership dues are now $70.

The audition material has been taken from the books and/or methods listed below. Etudes are now specifically composed for the Alabama All State Jazz Band and are available at the Alabama-IAJE website. Each school should contact their music dealer or Jamey Aebersold to obtain the books, CD’s or cassettes. The audition material is taken from the following sources:

  • All instruments except drums: Duke Ellington, Volume 12, Play-A-Long and Recording Set by Jamey Aebersold
  • Drums only: Jazz Conception for Drums by Jim Snidero

Scales and other pertinent jazz information can be found in Jazz Aids Handbook by Jamey Aebersold, published by:

Jamey Aebersold

Alabama IAJE All-State Jazz Band Auditions Taping Instructions

  • It is important that the student make as good a tape/CD, in terms of quality and clearness, as possible.
  • Make sure the audition music is recorded at the proper level with the play-a-long recordings.
  • If recording to cassette, use a new, non-metal cassette tape. You may make a CD.
  • Tune with the recording as closely as possible. Cassette players play at different speeds and your Play-Along may be flat or sharp depending on your playback system. If you have access to a variable speed tape player, play the tape on this machine and adjust the pitch using a tuner. CD players will not have this problem and are highly preferred!
  • The CD/tape label and recorded ID should contain ONLY the student’s name and instrument. The audition form will have the school name on it. So the judges will not know the school a student is from DO NOT INCLUDE THE SCHOOL ON THE LABEL OR RECORDED ID.
  • IMPORTANT!!!! Preview the CD/tape before you submit it.
  • The audition form is contained in the middle of the ABA handbook or can be downloaded here.

New this year! The etudes were composed as a big band chart. Below is a link to the score and a MIDI file for playback on your computer.
