Selection for the Alabama All-State Jazz Band will be determined by a taped audition that students will prepare and send to the Alabama Jazz Educator’s Association President. Tone quality, musicianship, style, accurate tempos on etudes, and improvisational abilities will all be considered by the judges who listen to the tapes. The recordings will be judged by the music faculty at the University of South Alabama. Directors will be notified of the selected students approximately three weeks after the deadline. (Approximately December
11, 2009) Guitarist, bassists and drummers will be required to bring their own equipment for rehearsals and performances at AMEA.

All student audition tapes or cds, audition form, audition fee, and director’s registration to the newly formed Alabama Jazz Educator’s Association (AJEA) must be submitted to the AJEA president postmarked on or before November 20, 2009. The audition fee is $15.00 per student. Make checks payable to Alabama Jazz Educator’s Association – AJEA. Directors must be members of MENC/AMEA/ABA and the newly formed Alabama Jazz Educator’s Association. The dues for the newly formed Alabama Jazz Educator’s Association are $70.00. Please make checks for AJEA dues payable to the Alabama Jazz Educator’s Association. (AJEA) Download member application form here.

AMEA All-State Jazz Band Auditions Taping Instructions

  • It is important that the student make as good a tape/CD, in terms of quality and clearness, as possible.
  • Make sure the audition music is recorded at the proper level with the play-a-long recordings.
  • If recording to cassette, use a new, non-metal cassette tape. You may make a CD.
  • Tune with the recording as closely as possible. Cassette players play at different speeds and your Play-Along may be flat or sharp depending on your playback system. If you have access to a variable speed tape player, play the tape on this machine and adjust the pitch using a tuner. CD players will not have this problem and are highly preferred!
  • The CD/tape label and recorded ID should contain ONLY the student’s name and instrument. The audition form will have the school name on it. So the judges will not know the school a student is from DO NOT INCLUDE THE SCHOOL ON THE LABEL OR RECORDED ID.
  • IMPORTANT!!!! Preview the CD/tape before you submit it.
  • The audition form is contained in the middle of the ABA handbook or can be downloaded here.
